Abstract
907,598. Particle accelerators. BIRMING- HAM, UNIVERSITY OF. Dec. 22, 1960 [Dec. 22, 1959], No. 43464/59. Class 39 (1). A D.C. particle accelerator section comprises a body 1 cast in an epoxy resin, a bore within the tube and open at at least one end, a plurality of spaced electrodes 2 supported by the body and extending into the bore, electrical conductors extending within the body and through which the electrodes are adapted for connection to a source of E.M.F., and means whereby the accelerator can be connected to further accelerators or to a source of particles so as to form part of the vacuum envelope. Grading resistors 6 and ceramic rings between the electrodes may be embedded within the resin, and the outer pair of electrodes 3, 4 provided with screw-threaded sockets. Application of a voltage between electrodes 4, 5 serves to focus the beam and the external surface of the body may be of sinusoidal form so as to increase the surface path between the electrodes at opposite ends of the accelerator.
