Abstract

1285767 Discharge apparatus P FORSLIND 15 Aug 1969 40955/69 Heading HlX A device for producing ionized air comprises a blade of insulating material having a channel 5 through which an air stream may be passed, and a positive electrical terminal 15 and at least two negative-ion electrical generators 7 each comprising an end portion 10 which houses radioactive material extending into said channel through openings in a layer 19 of conductive material, whereby negative ions from said generators 7 are picked up and transported by said air stream before reaching the positive electrical terminal. The electrodes 7 are rods having grooves 8 engaged by pins 9 permitting longitudinal displacement under the control of an adjustment element 12 engaging a threaded end part 11 of each rod 7. The opposite end of each rod is also threaded to receive a container 10 housing a zirconium foil activated with tritium. The layer 19, which prevents the block from becoming statically charged, may be a foil of red brass. Air is forced through the channel 5 by an electric blower, and the device includes a transformer and rectifier for applying a negative voltage of at least 900 V. to the generators 7. Terminal 15 is connected to earth and may carry a container 17 similar to the containers 10.
