A frame 12 supports a horizontally-reciprocable table 16 which carries an intaglio or etched plate 18. The frame 12 also supports a vertically adjustable worksupport 14 especially for articles of ceramic ware and provided with a resilient article rest 54 and pillars 19 carrying a guideway 20 for a carriage 22 slidable between positions directly above the work support 14 and above the plate 18 when in its extreme right-hand end position. The carriage 22 which is reciprocated by an airoperated piston in a cylinder 144 carries a vertically reciprocable printing pad 28 shaped like an inverted dome and made of resilient material, e.g. gelatine or hollow rubber. The pad is reciprocated by an air-operated piston in a cylinder 24, Fig. 2 (not shown), to transfer designs from the plate 18, Fig. 1, to articles placed in turn on the support 14. The table 16 is reciprocated by an airoperated cylinder 64 beneath an inking device 70 which inks the plate 18 during its movement to the left. The inking device comprises two rollers 72, 74 supported by end-plates 76 having a horizontal pivot 77 and rocked by an airoperated piston in a cylinder 88. The roller 72 has a rubber surface, while the roller 74 is of steel. A pivoted blade 96 bears adjustably against the roller 74 to form an ink trough therewith. As the plate 18 returns to its righthand end position a doctor blade 112 is swung downwardly, into engagement with the plate 18, by an air-operated piston in a cylinder 126. The pistons within the cylinders 64, 88, and 126 are operated in the correct sequence under the control of valves operated by movement of the carriage 22, pad 28, and doctor blade 112.
