Abstract

907,019. Sash windows. WILLIAMS & WILLIAMS Ltd. March 29, 1960 [March 31, 1959], No. 10903/59. Class 20 (3). A window sash 2 is partly counterbalanced by a spring arrangement 8 and is provided with a frictional braking device 21 which normally prevents vertical movement of the sash but acts to free itself when sufficient force is applied to the sash to move it upwardly or downwardly. As shown, a metallic sash frame 2 is secured by screws 17 to a plate 13 slidable in the main metal frame 1, 3 within which are housings 4, 5 to accommodate torsion-type spring-balancing devices 8, and housings 6, 7 to accommodate the braking devices 21. The tubular housing 9 of the spring balancing device 8 is secured to housing 3 while a twisted rod member is indirectly secured to the plate 13, so that as the sash is raised the twisted rod winds up the torsion spring to keep the balancing action constant. The brake device, Fig. 3, comprises a pair of spring-urged jamming members 21 which engage a flexible strip 31, secured at both ends in the channel 20 and thus to the sash through the plate 13. The movement of the strip 13 towards one member 21 with a force applied to the sash, sufficient to overcome the force of spring 30, allows the strip to move clear of the face 24 of the other member 21 and thus allows the strip to move freely between the faces 24 of the members 21 with only the frictional resistance of the strip against the face 24 against which it bears. Flexible sealing strips 18, Fig. 2, in the end walls 15, 16, prevent passage of moisture into the side member 1. Specification 835,915 is referred to.
