Abstract

906,605. Extruding. METAL RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT Ltd. July 29, 1959, No. 26101/59. Class 83 (4). A tubular metal article is made by backwardly extruding a heated metal billet 6, Fig. 2, over a mandrel 5 having an enlarged removable end 9, shearing the closed end 14, Fig. 4, from the extruded article 8, removing the enlarged end 9 from the mandrel and then removing the extruded article. A heated solid billet is placed in a container 4 carried by the movable platen 2 of a press and the mandrel 5 is supported from a fixed platen 3. After extrusion, the container 4 is withdrawn, a shearing die 13 is inserted and the platen 2 is actuated to shear off the end 14. The enlarged mandrel end 9 is then removed to permit withdrawal of the extruded article 8. The mandrel may be movable transversely to facilitate withdrawal of long tubes. The extruded tubes may subsequently be drawn on a draw bench. Long slender mandrels may be supported at their mid length by rollers and centralized at their upper end by a segmental ring.
