Abstract

906,406. Television. PYE Ltd. Oct. 29, 1959 [Oct. 30, 1958], No. 34831/58. Drawings to Specification. Class 40 (3). [Also in Group XL (a)] A television camera intended for use inside an operating nuclear reactor is constructed of materials and components of which substantially all have: (a) a sufficient resistance to damage by radiation to permit a reasonable operating life, (b) a low magnitude of induced radio-activity and a short half-life (less than 24 hours is specified) in order that a faulty camera may be repaired with safety in a reaonable time after withdrawal from the reactor, and (c) a small neutron-absorbing cross-section (less than 0.25 barns is specified) to avoid the camera having undue controlling effect on the functioning of the reactor. The following components and materials are preferred. For parts requiring structural strength: aluminium. For the camera casing: aluminium or stainless steel. For structural parts requiring insulating properties: ceramics. For coil formers: ceramics, material known under Registered Trade Mark " Tufnol," aluminium with its surface anodized. For camera lenses: stabilized glass substantially boron-free. For the end face of the pick-up tube: fused quartz glass, synthetic sapphire, stabilized glass. For the pick-up tube envelope: crown glass substantially boron-free. Amplifier valve envelopes: metal, or glass which is boron-free. Resistors: nickel - chrome wire wound on a ceramic former, metal film on fibreglass wound on a ceramic former. Wire for coils and connections: aluminium anodized to provide an insulating surface. Solder: aluminium. Non-electrolytic capacitors: capacitors having aluminium electrodes and paper, mica or ceramic dielectrics. Electrolytic capacitors: capacitors having tantalum electrodes and embedded in an epoxy resin where they incorporate a gasket of polytetrafluorethylene. For flexible seals: silicon-based synthetic rubber. For insulating sleeving: silica fibre or polythene. For electric lamp envelopes: quartz or stabilized glass. For electric lamp caps: aluminium. The Specification includes a detailed camera construction, Figs. 1-3 (not shown), in which an assembly of a lens, a pick-up tube and a twostage resistance-coupled head amplifier are contained in a cylindrical container constructed as a plug-in unit which may be readily detached from a housing. The housing is constructed as a labyrinth of annular chambers through which a cooling gas is circulated, the gas being fed to and returned from the housing by hoses incorporated in a common assembly with electric connections to the camera and lifting wires by which the housing may be lowered into the reactor. A detailed circuit for the camera is given, Fig. 4 (not shown).
