Abstract

906,258. Cable clips. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd. Jan. 23, 1961 [July 22, 1960], No. 25643/60. Class 36. [Also in Groups XXV and XXVIII] A clamp comprises a link 1 which may be a closed link or open at one end for the reception of a body (which may be a single member or a group of members) to which the link is to be secured, a pair of wedge members 6, 8 projecting laterally into the link from opposite sides thereof and having oppositely inclined surfaces 11, 12 for engaging the body and means 9 for drawing these wedge members towards one another to bring their inclined surfaces into engagement with the body and to force the body against the end wall of the link or in the case of a closed link against one of the end walls of the link forming the wedge members and the means for drawing them together form a unit which is insertable in and withdrawable from the link as a unit when the body to be clamped is in the link. As shown in Fig. 1 one of the wedge members 6 is the head of a bolt and the other wedge member is slidable on the stem of the bolt, the means for drawing the wedge members together being a nut 9 engaged with a threaded stem of the bolt. The link is open and each of the arms 2, 3 of the link has an aperture 4, 5. The aperture 4 is formed with two steps 14, 15 so that its shape corresponds to the cross-sectional shape of the wedge member 8 which is a loose fit in this aperture. The aperture 5 in the arm 3 is formed with one step 16 only and is designed to receive the wedge member 6 which is of rectangular crosssection. Before the unit is inserted into the link the wedge member 6 is rotated through 90 degrees in a clockwise direction from the position shown in Fig. 1 and the head is passed through the aperture 4 in the arm 2 of the link. Arrows are provided on the member 6 and the link to indicate the correct position of the head. The unit is pushed through the link until the head 6 passes partly through the aperture 5 and this can be accomplished with the body to be secured in position; the head is rotated through 90 degrees in an anticlockwise direction until one of its flat surfaces bears against the step 16 after which the nut 9 can be tightened to clamp the body between the faces 11, 12 and the bottom of the link. To reduce the extent to which the nut 9 must be slackened to permit insertion or withdrawal of the unit from the link the hole in the wedge member 8 tapers from an elliptical shape at the end 19 to a circular shape at the end against which the nut 9 bears. The link shown is provided with an eye 20 for the attachment of the link to a member and when the link is of closed construction it has an eye at one end and a hook at the other end. A liner can be provided to enable a smalldiameter body to be gripped by the wedge members 6, 8. The liner fits into a recess in the inner surface of the link. Spacing pieces can also be provided for gripping a plurality of smalldiameter bodies. The link can be modified so that two units can be used with it to enable it to grip both tubes of a pair of telescoping tubes. In this construction the link is stepped to form on its inner surface a rib which limits the extent to which the outer tube can pass into the link and a flexible O member can be provided which fits closely around the inner telescopic tube and against the rib to provide a seal between the telescopic tubes to prevent entry of moisture.
