A spalling-resistant refractory brick 1 comprises sections 2, 3 and 4 held together by key members 5 disposed in lateral surfaces of the brick and optionally held in position by plates. The sectional planes of separation are said at operating temperatures to discourage longitudinal migration of mobile liquid constituents and to allow transverse differential expansion. The longitudinal dimensions of the lower sections are not more than four inches or less than two inches and less than one-half the brick length. The projections of the key members may be inwardly-disposed, Fig. 3 (not shown), or said members may be circular, Fig. 5 (not shown). Alternatively, plates may be disposed in oblique saw cuts made between sections, Fig. 7 (not shown), or again each section 19, Fig. 9, has disposed centrally therein a tapering member 20 attached to an adjacent member by screwed pins 22. Other centrally disposed key members comprise I-section members, Fig. 12 (not shown), U-members, Fig. 14 (not shown), corrugated members, Fig. 16 (not shown), and ceramic members with bulbous ends, Fig. 18 (not shown). Final modifications, Figs. 20-23 (not shown), have mortise and tenon joints, in which the tenon may be strenthened by a I-shaped insert. The bricks may be of basic materials, e.g. magnesite or chrome ore or may be of a duplex structure, e.g. a brick for a sprung roof comprising silica and chromemagnesite. Other combinations are zirconsillimanite, magnesia-zirconia, zircon-zirconia, chrome-zirconia, spinel-alumina and spinealmagnesia.
