Abstract

905,391. Luminescent coatings for glass. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Dec. 14, 1960 [Dec. 23, 1959], No. 43656/59. Class 56. [Also in Group XL (a)] A scintillator for detecting nuclear radiation may include a luminescent glass layer comprising, by weight, 50-80% silica, 10-0% alkaline earth metal oxide, 1-20% cerous oxide, and 1-10% alkali metal oxide. This layer is fused to a glass base. For example, molten luminescent glass may be poured directly on to the base, or rolled on to the base from an adjacent piece of glass, so as to provide an even coating, or a smooth coating may be formed on a metal plate, the heated glass base being lowered into contact therewith to obtain fusion. Alternatively a bulb or cylinder of luminescent glass may be blown so that part of it contacts the heated glass base. The luminescent glass layer may be reduced to a thickness of 1 mil, by grinding with carborundum or emery powders before polishing.
