In a conveyer installation for conveying elongated articles 12, e.g. motor car bodies, through a drying or stoving oven 10 wherein each article is suspended from a pair of trolleys 24, one near each end of the article, and an endless chain 13 running along an upper track 9 is provided with dogs 22 for propelling the trolleys 24 along a lower track 14, the tracks approach the oven at right-angles to the direction through which the articles pass through the oven and the lower track is divided before entering the oven into two tracks 14a, 14b, to which the trolleys are transferred alternately by a switch 29 which is moved from one to the other of two operative positions by successive trolleys through control means including a solenoid 31. The arrangement is such that articles approach the oven in an end-to-end relationship, after which the front trolley supporting each article passes to the track 14b while the corresponding rear trolley passes to the track 14a, so that the articles are moved into the oven in a direction transverse to their lengths. Beyond the switch 29 the trolleys at both ends of each article are engaged by dogs on two parallel runs of the chain 13 which pass through the oven in the same direction. After leaving the oven the trolleys engaged by the run of the chain 13 which passes around sprocket 15 are disengaged from the dogs on this run of the chain, while the run of the chain passing around sprocket 17 pulls the trolleys supporting the other ends of the articles around the sprocket 17 on to a portion of the track 14 which extends transversely away from the oven and into which the two track portions 14a, 14b merge. The driving chain comprises running rollers 20 and guide rollers 21 which engage corresponding surfaces on the upper track 9, while the trolleys have corresponding running rollers 25 and guide rollers 26.
