Abstract
905,193. Automatic control systems. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Feb. 25, 1959 [Feb. 25, 1958], No. 6088/58. Class 38 (4). In a system for automatically controlling pH value of liquid flow, a valve controls the addition of a chemical agent, and a pH meter, having its sensing electrode in the flow downstream of the point where the chemical agent is added, moves a member in one sense or the other to influence light rays and thereby cause the valve to move towards a closed or open position according to the sense of pH deviation. In Fig. 2 a pointer SA of an instrument measuring the pH value of a flowing liquid (not shown), by means of an electrode immersed in the liquid, carries a shutter SH which blocks light from a lamp L when the liquid has a desired pH value. With rise or fall in the pH value, pointer SA moves one way or the other about pivot P to allow a photo-cell C 1 or C 2 to become illuminated via a mirror M 1 or M 2 so that one or other of two electric motors (not shown) is started to correct the pH value by opening or closing a valve controlling the supply of acid or alkali upstream of the electrode. Operation of the motors during correction is made intermittent by a continuouslyoperating time switch (not shown). Use of a reversible electric motor instead of two motors is referred to.
