Abstract

796,814. Automatic mixture control systems. UNITED STATES STEEL CORPORATION. Feb. 15, 1955 [Nov. 12, 1954], No. 4549/55. Class 38 (4). In a system for automatically maintaining a predetermined conductivity of a mixture of water and a substance in a conductivity cell, the voltage from a potentiometer in circuit with the electric supply to the cell is applied, in opposition to a bias voltage, to an electron tube relay, contacts of which control, through a solenoid-operated valve, the supply of substance to the mixture. As shown, a steel strip S to be pickled or cleaned is passed through a mixture of acid and water in a tank 2, the voltage from a generator 12 being applied between the strip and electrodes 10. Starting, with the tank empty, is effected by closing the switch 74C, 74C1. In consequence a motor 68 runs to close camoperated contacts 64C for a period of time so that a solenoid-operated valve 46 is opened to allow a predetermined quantity of acid to flow into the tank through a conduit 22. Water flows into the tank continuously through a conduit 18 until the mixture rises to the level of probes 80 so that a solenoid-operated valve 76 is closed. Thereafter any decrease in the acid content reduces the current passing through a conductivity cell 24 so that the consequent decrease in volt-drop across a potentiometer 30 operates a thermionic valve controlled relay 42 to energize a solenoid-operated valve 46 which allows acid to enter the tank to correct the acid content. To prevent over-correction a motor 54 continuously operating contacts 52C permits only intermittent short-period opening of valve 46. The drive to strip S (not shown) is started by operation of a push-button 92 which also operates a relay 60. Unless the strip is running, relay 60 maintains motor 54 deenergized with contacts 52C open to prevent operation of the acid correcting system. The level of the mixture is maintained by automatic operation of solenoid valve 76 but if for any reason the level falls below a probe 88P a relay 90 is de-energized to stop the strip and light a warning lamp 94.
