Abstract

1,086,742. Measuring fluid-Bow electrically. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. March 12, 1965 [March 13, 1964], No.10836/64. Heading G1N. [Also in Division H3] In a device for detecting changes in the rate of flow of a fluid (e.g. ventilating air in a mine) by virtue of the consequent changes in the cooling effect of the flow, an electric heating coil 21 exposed to the fluid flow is connected in an A. C. bridge circuit 47 with a temperature-compensating coil 22 which is similar but shielded from the fluid flow so as to be affected only by its temperature, the bridge being set by a slider 46 to be balanced at a chosen rate of flow; the phase-sense of any output from the bridge, relative to the A. C. supply at terminals 27, is indicative of the sense of the change in fluid flow rate from the chosen value. A transistor 51 acts as a phase-sensitive rectifier so that an amplifier 57 produces an output to energize a relay 64 only when the rate of flow is greater than or equal to the chosen value, the relay 64 being de-energized to light warning lamps 17 and actuate a control circuit 68 when the rate of flow falls below the chosen value. The sensitivity of the device may be reduced by fitting an enclosure with variable apertures over the coils 21, 22.
