Abstract

886,974. Measurement of fluid flow by radio-activity. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. July 28, 1960 [July 28, 1959], No. 25815/59. Class 40(3). The volume rate of flow of a fluid in a system is measured in terms of the axial displacement of a radioactive float in a tube connected to the system so as to maintain constant pressure across the orifice formed between the float and the tube by at least one co-operating detector located near the tube. A tube 1 containing a float 2 is surrounded by a block 3 of radiation absorbing metal in which are holes 4 at different points along the tube, each hole being radial to the tube and leading to a. cavity 5 in which is a radiation-sensitive detector. The outputs of the detectors may be supplied to indicators such as lamps, be utilized for controlling the flow, and/or be supplied to a bridge circuit whose out of balance current is indicative of flow. The block may be movable to extend measurement over the range of possible movement of the float and movement of the block to the position giving maximum output from one detector may indicate the flow.
