Abstract

904,952. Feeding webs. HALLEY & SONS Ltd., JAMES, and HALLEY, A. M. Jan. 1, 1960 [Jan. 2, 1959], No. 129/59. Class 100 (1). A replacement roll 17 is accelerated prior to a web splicing operation, by pivotal movement of a pair of arms 10 about a shaft 11, thereby causing a fixed abutment pin 32 to rotate a brake drum 18 provided with a cam 31 for engagement with the pin 32. The drum 18 can be locked to brake blocks 20 by a plunger 26 when apertures 23 and 24 in one of the blocks 20 and in the drum respectively are in register. The plunger 26 is disengaged from the aperture 23, by a spring 27, when an aperture 30 in a pivotally-mounted plate 28 registers with the aperture 24, thereby permitting rotation of the drum 18 and shaft 15 against the frictional resistance of the blocks 20. The arms 10 are rotated to position the replacement roll 17 in engagement with the expiring web from a roll 16 by an electric motor through gearing 13 before accelerating the replacement roll 17.
