Abstract

570,795. Feeding sheets and webs. JONES, K. W. Feb. 29, 1944, No. 3744. Addition to 559,388. [Class 100 (i)] The apparatus described in the parent Specification for feeding webs and sheets by means of perforated hollow rollers 1 rotating in boxes connected to an exhausting device is modified by evacuating the roller through one or both of its ends, and a mask 10 is used to cover the perforations in the arc of the periphery of the roller 1 not required to be exposed to the pressure of the atmosphere. The web 9 may be turned through approximately a right angle as shown in Fig. 2, or may be reversed by being passed around one half the periphery of the roller. The mask is shaped to strip the web or sheet from the roller. As shown in Fig. 1 the roller is mounted on a hollow shaft 3 by means of welding, and the shaft 3 is supported in bearings 7. The shaft 3 is connected to an exhauster by means of a pipe 14, a channel 12 in a collar 11, and perforations 8 in the shaft 3. Alternatively the roller 1 may be exhausted by means of apertures 15 in the ends 2 of the rollers which register in succession with apertures in the collar 12, or as shown in Fig. 6 with an aperture 120 in the collar 11. This collar is provided with an aperture 17 connected to the atmosphere, and at each revolution this registers with an aperture 16 in an end disc 2 to release the web and thus permits of an intermittent feed. The mask 10 may be machined out of a solid block, or may be formed from a pressed plate or sheet. The end discs 2 are formed with solid trunnions 5.
