Abstract

1,207,080. Winding webs. SCOTT PAPER CO. 6 June, 1969 [12 June, 1968], No. 28886/69. Heading B8R. [Also in Division F2] Web winding apparatus comprises a bedroll over which a web 41 is fed to a core 43 disposed on one of a plurality of rotatably mounted winding mandrels 44 carried by a rotatable turret past a pick-up position where a free leading edge, formed by severance of the web by a knife 50, is transferred to a core disposed on a successive mandrel, the surface of the bedroll having a plurality of apertures 33 therein, the apertures communicating with stationary suction means effective for holding portions of the web overlying the apertures to the bedroll. The apparatus may include means 75 for applying adhesive to the leading edge of the web, and the arrangement is such that during the gluing, cutting and transferring operations the relative portions of the web are held firmly in contact with the surface of the bedroll. Thus, if the web should break during these operations or during operations such as longitudinal slitting that may take place on the bedroll, or fail to transfer to a core 43, the bedroll will carry it safely past the pick-up position, where it can be received by a web-disposal unit 82. The bedroll comprises a shell (11) supported by trunnions (13, 14, Fig. 1, not shown) for rotation on a fixed shaft (16) carrying plates 25, 26 which define a vacuum chamber 22 communicating through apertures 32 to a passage 30 formed in the shaft 16, to which passage a vacuum pump or suction fan is connected. A further chamber 88 defined by the plate 26 and a plate 90 may also be provided, this chamber communicating by way of apertures 87 and a passage 31 to a source of high-pressure air which deflects an unwound web into the disposal unit 82. The bedroll may be provided with a movable member 51 located in an axially aligned surface groove 63, the member being actuated in a predetermined cyclical manner so that it supports the web spaced from the surface of the bedroll at the cutting and pick-up positions (Figs. 4 to 7, not shown). The shell (11) may be of perforated sheet, honeycomb material or other porous cellular material, and may be subjected to partial vacuum by a stationary suction box disposed adjacent the exterior of the bedroll at a portion of its periphery not wrapped by the web 41.
