Class 100(1) An apparatus for winding a web 13 of material, e.g. paper, comprises a winding cylinder 1, a driving disc 3 eccentrically mounted with respect to the cylinder 1, such that a portion only of the periphery of the driving disc extends outwardly of the cylinder, a driving connection between the disc and cylinder, such that they rotate at substantially equal peripheral speeds, a carrier 12 for a winding drum 11 movable between a position in which the drum 11 is in driving engagement with the disc and a position in which the drum is driven by the cylinder, whereby the drum is accelerated to a peripheral speed substantially equal to that of the cylinder prior to the web being wound on the drum. As shown, the disc 3 is mounted on an antifriction bearing 5 carried by an eccentric bush 6. The bush 6 is mounted for relative angular adjustment on a bearing 7 supporting the shaft 15 of the cylinder 1. The disc 3 rotates about an axis 10 displaced from the axis 9 of the cylinder 1, the disc being driven by a pin 2 projecting from the cylinder 1 into a slot 4 in the disc. The carrier 12 is rocked by a hydraulic or pneumatic cylinder 17, such that the drum 11 follows the path indicated by the arrow 18. When the drum reaches position B the shaft of the drum is received in bearings 16 movable along the frame 14. When winding is complete the shaft of the drum 11 is clear of the forked ends 12<1> of the carrier 12, thus allowing the carrier 12 to be moved into position A to receive a fresh winding drum 11 which is accelerated by the disc 3. The completed roll is then removed from the bearings 16 whilst the new drum 11 is moved to position C to commence winding.
