Abstract

Class 100 (1) A web-roll supporting and changing apparatus comprises a stationary frame, a carrier mounted for rotation relatively to the stationary frame, a plurality of arms or pairs of arms mounted on the carrier for angular movement about axes spaced from one another and parallel with and radially spaced from-the axis of rotation of the carrier, means for mounting a web roll on each arm or pair of arms so as to rotate about an axis parallel with but remote from the pivotal axis of that arm, and pressure-resisting means disposed parallel with the axis of rotation of the carrier so that the web is pressed against the pressure resisting means by a full web-roll at least when the carrier is rotated. As shown, the carrier comprises end member 1 having radial limbs 2 projecting from hubs 3 spaced apart axially on a shaft 4 rotatable by a worm 8 and worm wheel 7. Two pairs of bellcrank levers 23 journalled on shafts 11 fixed to the limbs 2 support web rolls in bearings 12 provided with hinged caps 13 and carry rollers 16 co-operating with a cam 17 at their opposite ends. The cam 17 limits the angular rotation of the bell-crank levers 23. A web guiding roller 22 is mounted on a shaft 21 between the ends of each pair of limbs 2. In operation, web withdrawn from the roll in the upper position passes around the roller 22 and around a pressure resisting splicing roller 24. The replacement roll mounted on the lower bellcrank levers 23 is prepared for splicing by the application of an adhesive patch. When the splice of the replacement web to the expiring web is to be effected the carrier 1 is rotated clockwise, such that the replacement roll contacts the running web 30, thereby accelerating the replacement roll and bringing the adhesive patch thereon into contact with the web 30. A knife 29 is then actuated electromagnetically, pneumatically, or hydrauiically to cut the trailing end of the web 30. The carrier is then further rotated clockwise to raise the running roll into the upper position and a replacement roll is loaded in to the bearings 12 carrying the exhausted roll. In a modification, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown) a carrier 36 has radial arms 37, 38, 39, 40, the arms 37, 38 carrying web rolls, supporting levers 41, 42. A pressure resisting splicing roll 50 is mounted adjacent a knife 51 actuated by an electromagnet 54. The web 49 is spliced to the web of a replacement roll upon counter clockwise rotation of the carrier 36. A roller 44 on each of the arms 41, 42 co-operates with the inner periphery of an interrupted annular ring 46 to prevent these levers springing during their upward movement from the lower position to their upper position 14, the movement of lever 42 from the Fig. 3 to Fig. 4 position.
