Abstract

904,918. Crimping yarns. ALLIED CHEMICAL CORPORATION. April 26, 1961 [May 4, 1960], No. 15159/61. Class 120 (3). In a method of compression-crimping one or more ends of drawn nylon - 6 multifilamentary yarn of denier 1000-5000 and filament count of 50-250, the yarn carrying a lubricant finish is contacted with dry steam before it is forced into a crimping zone. The steam is at or just above its saturation temperature under the pressure subsisting and is maintained just before it enters the steaming zone at a higher temperature of 103‹C-130‹C and at a superatmospheric pressure constant within two ounces per square inch. The temperature of the steam both before it enters the steaming zone and in said zone is maintained constant within 1 ‹ C. After the yarn has left the steaming zone it is fed, with a moisture content of 2-3% by weight, into the crimping zone under conditions such that it receives no further supply of heat and is acted on by no other setting-agent and when in the main body of the crimping zone is at a temperature between 60‹ and 90‹ C. and is at a higher temperature at the entrance to the crimping zone than in the main body.
