904,765. Finishing fabrics. PAULUS, H. Feb. 16, 1960 [Feb. 19, 1959], No. 5418/60. Class 42 (1). The width of fabric treated by a shearing or other dressing operation is limited by displacing, in opposite directions transverse to the direction of movement of the fabric T, the table 2 which supports the fabric and the shearing or dressing member 8 so as to leave predetermined widths of the edges T<SP>1</SP>, T<SP>11</SP> untreated. In the embodiment shown, the fabric T is sheared by helical blades 9 mounted on a cylinder 8 carried by bearings 6 on a cross-bar 4 which also carries a flat blade-holder. A photo-electric cell P scans the selvedge T<SP>1</SP> and causes a piston 5 to displace the cross-bar 4 and with it the cylinder 8 so that a predetermined width of the selvedge remains unsheared. Similarly, a second cell P<SP>1</SP> causes a piston 3 to shift the table 2 to leave a predetermined width of the selvedge T<SP>11</SP> unsheared since shearing takes place only when the table 2 holds the fabric against the cylinder 8. In a modification, either of these displacements are combined with a fabric-guiding system for dis. placing the fabric laterally during longitudinal movement thereof. In a further modification, a plurality of cylinders having helical blades alternatively of right-hand and left-hand pitch are provided.
