Abstract
904,393. Air-blast switches. ALLMANNA SVENSKA ELEKRISKA A.B. Aug. 12, 1960 [Aug. 13, 1959; May 7, 1960], No. 27932/60. Class 38 (5). In an air-blast switch having a plurality of insulating columns 3 each carrying an extinguishing chamber 1 housing a " breaking gap," the insulating columns and the chambers being filled with compressed air when the switch is opened and closed, the supply of compressed air is limited by throttling means which, when the switch is opened, are opened for a short time to effect rapid refilling of the columns and chambers with compressed air. Thus, in the event of damage to a column or chamber, the loss of compressed air from the rest of the switch is prevented. In the arrangement shown the throttling means each comprise a valve member 8 normally closed by a spring 11 and having a small channel 37 through which compressed air is supplied to the associated column 3. To open the switch a valve 39 is operated to supply compressed air to a pipe 2 connected to the switch operating mechanisms and to supply compressed air to a cylinder containing a piston 44. This piston operates a valve 13 to vent cylinders 10 to atmosphere so that the compressed air acting on pistons 9 opens the valve members 8 to permit a full supply of compressed air to the columns 3 and chambers 1. After a short time the pressures on both sides of the piston 44 are equalized by air passing through a channel 38, so that the valve 13 is restored to the position shown in which compressed air is supplied to the cylinders 10 and the valve members 8 are closed. To permit the switch to be initially filled with compressed air a cock 42 and non-return valves 43 are provided. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 1 (not shown), provision is made for opening the valve members 8 without air being supplied to the control air pipe 2.
