Abstract

904,339. Combustion chambers. PERKINS Ltd., F. Sept. 23, 1959 [Nov. 6, 1958], No. 35637/58. Class 7(3) An insert 3 forming the lower end of a combustion chamber 1 has an oval or elliptical main aperture 10 leading to the cylinder and a secondary aperture 11 in the side thereof leading to a groove 12 which discharges into the valve recesses, Fig. 6, the floor 13 of the insert sloping towards the aperture 10 and the interior surface of the insert forming a smooth continuation of the combustion chamber wall. The groove 12 and ramp 13 co-operate to set up a secondary swirl in opposition to that produced by the main aperture 10.
