Abstract

Coal is treated by a method which comprises intimately mixing a dry or only surface-wet raw coal fraction containing fines and/or smalls with not more than 10% by weight of oil or other non-aqueous reagent, whereby the particles of such coal are rendered hydrophobic, mixing the thus-treated coal with water and charging it into a coal-treatment machine from which the coal is recovered. The hydrophobication causes the fine particles to agglomerate, or to adhere to larger particles, when the mixing with water takes place. Preferably the mixing with oil is carried out at an elevated temperature which may be provided by direct steam. The treatment can be improved by providing, before the actual washing process, a wet intermediate treatment of the pretreated coal in mixers, on wet screens or in a purification drum. Examples are given of the treatment of fines of various compositions.
