Class 120(3) The free end of a yarn 10 wound on a pirn 20 is secured by winding such end around the pirn end 20a and subjecting the end coil or at least one of the end coils thus formed, as at 2 ; 3 and 3a; 4, 5 and 6 ; 7, 8 and 9 ; in Figs. 1, 2, 3, 4, to a mechanical action disturbing the order of the yarn layers in the coil, e.g. to produce the coil forms as shown in Figs. 1a-4a. As shown in Figs. 5 and 5a, the yarn-end portion 13 is pushed or drawn in a loop 14 into or completely through the end-coil 12. Alternatively, the coil may be treated by mechanical force so that the yarn layers roughen and felt with each other, or, shortly before the ejection of the wound yarn from the winding machine, the coil may be deformed by a pressing member acting in radial or radial and axial direction, Figs. 6, 6a-8, 8a (not shown).
