902,972. Doffing and donning mechanisms. DEERING MILLIKEN RESEARCH CORPORATION. Dec. 17, 1958 [Dec. 17, 1957], No. 40764/58. Class 120 (2). Apparatus for doffing and donning bobbins comprises a yarn package holder 19 for grasping the central periphery of a yarn package P and a bobbin holder 21 for grasping the end of an empty bobbin B, the holders being mounted on a carrier 11 which is lowered to grasp the package P, then raised, moved horizontally, lowered to donn the bobbin B and raised again for removing the package P from its holder 19. Preferably a number of package and bobbin holders are mounted alternately on a common carrier and arranged in alignment or, for packages of large diameter, in staggered relation with the package holders positioned on and the bobbin holders off-set from the longitudinal central axis of the carrier. Each package holder 19 comprises an elastic tube 29 secured at either end to a rigid tube 23, which is fixed to the carrier 11 by brackets 25, to form a chamber 35. Air pressure is supplied from source 43 via a valve 41 and conduits 37, 39 to enlarge the chamber 35 so that the tube 29 grips the package P for doffing Each bobbin holder 21 comprises an inverted cup 47 of rubber with a skirt 51 for guiding the end of a bobbin B into contact with an inner gripping surface 59 profiled so that a greater force is necessary to release than to insert the bobbin. A plunger 57 carrying a disc 55 is lowered to eject the bobbin B by means of air pressure supplied from the source 43 via a valve 73, the interior of the carrier 11 and an aperture 61 to a chamber 75 sealed by a rubber washer 77. In a modification for ring spinning on to a weft bobbin, Fig. 6, several -wraps of yarn are wound on to a groove 81<SP>1</SP> formed between the package P<SP>1</SP> and the bobbin base 83<SP>1</SP> and pulled off the bobbin during doffing so that they form transfer turns about the empty spindle. The carrier is then moved and lowered until the package P<SP>1</SP> rests on the ring rail, as shown in Fig. 6, the package P<SP>1</SP> released from its holder 19<SP>1</SP>, the carrier further lowered to seat the empty bobbin B<SP>1</SP> on its spindle and the holder 19<SP>1</SP> then re-inflated to grip the groove 81<SP>1</SP> so as to prevent further removal of yarn from the package and to break the yarn when the carrier is again raised. This method may be adapted for use with a warp bobbin by mounting a block on the ring rail to support the package while seating the bobbin on its spindle.
