Abstract
902,496. Toothed gearing. ZAHNRAEDERFABRIK RENK A.G. July 29, 1960, No. 26398/60. Class 80 (1). [Also in Group XXVI] To oppose the axial thrust of a compressor rotor 8 fast upon a hollow shaft 7 supported in a single bearing 6, the output sun-gear 22 &c. of a step-up planetary gear is formed with single helical teeth so inclined that the axial tooth reaction is just less than, or just greater than, the thrust of the rotor. The gearing comprises an input carrier 1<SP>1</SP> and planet pinions 17, the latter meshing the sun-gear 22 and also a reaction ring gear 18 supported axially between rings 21 in a housing 4 and supported against rotary motion therein by resilient buffers 19. In the form shown the bearing 6 is of the plain journal type with bearing discs 9, 10 at each end to absorb any axial thrust, but in a modified form, Fig. 3 (not shown), an air bearing drawing air under pressure from the compressor is used.
