[Also in Group VIII] The edges of the toe opening of a circularly knitted hose are closed in abutting relationship by a stitched seam comprising two needle threads anchored by a single looper thread. As shown, a transverse seam 17, formed on a twoneedle overedge sewing machine, joins the instep portion 14 to the top of the toe portion 16. The hose is formed with a gusset 23 between the foot portion 13 and the toe portion 16. It is stated that the additional fabric thus provided at the bottom of the toe opposite the toe opening, allows the edges of the toe opening to be brought together and joined without the formation of puckers at the end of the seam. To indicate the position of the seam, the courses of fabric knitted subsequent to the knitting of the seam line are knit of a yarn of contrasting colour or contrasting texture. Alternatively, the same yarn may be used and the subsequent courses differentiated by the insertion of tuck stitches therein. The surplus fabric is cut away during the scanning operation. The needle threads 33 and 34 are concentrated by a looper thread 35, and the supply of thread is so proportioned that the seam can lie flat with its edges 14a, 16a in abutting relation. It is stated that said abutting relation may alternatively be achieved by using elastic thread for the needles. The lines of stitching traverse adjacent courses 37, 38 and 40, 41 respectively. The needles are staggered and each wale of knitting is thus secured by at least three stitches.
