Abstract

897,880. Stockings, stitched seams. UNITED STATES TRUST CO. OF NEW YORK. July 22, 1959 [Aug. 13, 1958], No. 25119/59. Classes 112 and 141. A transversely extending opening in the toe of a knitted stocking is closed by laying the material on one side of the opening upon the material of the other side of the opening with the courses of respective sides in approximately parallel to one another, then cutting the margins of the opening so as to provide the opening in the opposite edges defined by freely extending loops of the knitted material, and joining the edges by a seam having at least twice as many stitches per inch as there are loops per inch in each edge of the opening, while catching substantially all of the loops with at least two of said stitches. As shown, the superfaced edge loops 14, 15, Fig. 3, are interconnected by a loose seam comprising a looper thread 16 and two needle threads 17, 18. The stocking is then turned inside out to provide a flat butt seam as shown in Fig. 4. The seam may extend across either the top or the underside of the toe portion.
