Very narrow welts may be formed on the edges of slit 2 and rubber threads 4 worked into the fabric adjacent the welts, the loops 5 of these threads may take in several courses Fig. 4. Rubber threads 4 may be worked into the welts 3. The ends of opposite welts may be partly joined, during knitting, by holding stitches 7 at the ends of the welt while knitting the first welt and after turning this welt and having knitted the second welt reintroducing the needles carrying these stitches.
