Abstract

Solutions of unsaturated polyester resins in monomeric copolymerizable compounds containing a tertiary aromatic amine and a quinone are storable but cold-hardenable on addition of an organic peroxide. The polyesters are polycondensates of unsaturated dicarboxylic acids, e.g. maleic or fumaric, optionally mixed with other dicarboxylic acids, e.g. phthalic and adipic, with polyhydric alcohols, e.g. ethylene or butylene glycol or hexan-1,6-diol. Comonomers specified are styrene, substituted styrenes, acrylic and methacrylic esters, and allyl alcohol and its esters. Specified amines are dimethyl- and diethyl-aniline and diethoxy-p-toluidine. Quinones specified are benzoquinone and 4-t-butyl-, 4,6-di-t-butyl-, 2,5-dihydroxy-, and 2,5-di-t-butyl-benzoquinones. 0,001 to 1% of quinone may be used. Examples illustrate that the use of the quinones, in contrast with hydroquinone or t-butyl pyrocatechol, improves the storability without adverse effect on the cold-hardening time when benzoyl peroxide is added.
