Abstract

1,139,100. Epoxy resin esters. H. H. ROBERTSON CO. 20 May, 1966, No. 22701/66. Headings C3B and C3P. A polymerizable polyhydroxy polyester having ethylenically unsaturated terminal groups and substantially free from unreacted epoxy groups is prepared by reacting : (a) one mol. of a diepoxy material having no substituent capable of reacting with -COOH other than hydroxyl; (b) 0À5 to 0À9 moles of a dicarboxylic acid; and (c) 1À0 to 0À2 moles of an unsaturated acid selected from acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, crotonic acid or a half-ester of fumaric or maleic acid, until substantially all the epoxy groups disappear. The diepoxide may be a diglycidyl ether of an alkane diol or a dihydric phenol, especially bisphenol A. The dicarboxylic acid may be phthalic, isophthalic, terephthalic, fumaric, maleic, adipic, succinic acid or the dimer acid of naturally occurring fatty acids. The unsaturated polyester of the invention may be copolymerized with a polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated monomer, e.g. styrene, vinyl toluene, divinyl benzene, acrylic acid, methacrylic acid ethyl or methyl (meth-)acrylate or mixtures thereof. In an example a polyester prepared from bisphenol A diglycidyl ether, crotonic acid and phthalic acid is copolymerized with an equal weight of 2-hydroxy-3-acryloxypropyl methacrylate.
