Abstract

1390804 Unsaturated polyesters TEIJIN Ltd 19 July 1972 [19 July 1971] 33772/72 Headings C3R and C3P Unsaturated -polyesters are prepared by reacting (a) a polyhydric alcohol component comprising 50-100 mol per cent of ethylene oxide and/or ethylene glycol and not more than 50 mol per cent of propylene glycol, propylene oxide, diethylene glycol or dipropylene glycol and (b) a dicarboxylic acid component comprising (i) 20-90 mol per cent of an unsaturated aliphatic dicarboxylic acid or anhydride and (ii) 10-80 mole per cent of a methyl-substituted isophthalic or terephthalic acid, the amounts being defined by y#3(x-30)/7 where x is the mol per cent of ethylene glycol and/or ethylene oxide and y is the mol per cent of (ii). The dicarboxylic acid component may also include up to 20 mol per cent, based on the total dicarboxylic acid component, of a saturated dicarboxylic acid. The examples describe (a) reacting a mixture of methylterephthalic acid and 4-methylisophthalic acid with (i) ethylene glycol and maleic anhydride, optionally with propylene glycol or diethylene glycol, (ii) ethylene oxide, ethylene glycol and maleic anhydride and (iii) isophthalic acid, ethyleneglycol, propylene glycol and maleic anhydride, (b) reacting methylterephthalic acid with ethylene glycol, propylene glycol and maleic anhydride and (c) reacting 4-methylisophthalic acid with ethylene glycol and maleic anhydride. The unsaturated polyesters may be copolymerized with an ethylenically unsaturated monomer, styrene being used in the examples.
