Abstract

Copolymers are produced by catalytically copolymerizing (a) co-condensates of xylene/formaldehyde resins with unsaturated dicarboxylic acids and polyhydric alcohols, and (b) polymerizable unsaturated compounds such as vinyl or allyl compounds. The co-condensates may be produced by condensing the three separate ingredients, or a condensation product of the unsaturated acid with polyhydric alcohol may be prepared and then modified with the xylene/formaldehyde resin. Unsaturated dicarboxylic acids specified are maleic and fumaric and these may be partially substituted by saturated acids such as adipic and phthalic acids. Copolymerizable compounds specified are styrene, methyl methacrylate and diallyl phthalate and the catalyst used may be benzoyl peroxide optionally with the addition of cobalt naphthenate or chloride. The examples include the use of hydroquinone as inhibitor of polymerization which may also be inhibited by the incorporation of amines as disclosed in Specification 764,581.
