Abstract

Cold setting copolymers are obtained by catalytically copolymerizing a vinyl monomer with a saturated and/or unsaturated polyester wherein at least one of the polyesters has been modified with a t-amine of formula <FORM:0757989/IV(a)/1> in which R is alkyl, preferably of 1 to 18 carbon atoms, aryl, preferably phenyl, toluolyl, diphenyl or naphthyl, aracyl or aralkyl and Z is COOH, COO- alkyl, NH2 or OH and x is 1 to 6. The t-amines specified are N-di-hydroxyethyl aniline and naphthyl amines, N-dihydroxyethylamino biphenyls, N-(phenyl, b -hydroxyethyl, g -amino-propyl)-amine, N-(phenyl, hydroxyethyl, carboxylethyl)-amine, anilino-diacetic acid and its dimethyl ester and p-toluidino-diacetic acid. The polyesters used may be those described in Specification 755,321 or may be derived from polybasic saturated and unsaturated carboxylic acids, e.g. adipic, phthalic and maleic acids, and polyhydric alcohols, e.g. ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol and 1,3-butanediol, and amino-alcohols with or without diamines. Vinyl monomers specified are styrene, vinyl acetate or chloride and acrylates and catalysts listed are benzoyl, cumene and lauroyl peroxides. Examples describe the modification of polyesters (I and II) during condensation and (III to XIII) after condensation, and the addition of hydroquinone as polymerization inhibitor.
