Abstract

Unsaturated polyesters are copolymerized with unsaturated monomers, e.g. styrene, vinyl acetate and methyl methacrylate, in the presence of sufficient cobalt 2-ethyl-hexoate to inhibit surface tackiness of the resulting copolymer. The polyesters may be derived from dicarboxylic acids or anhydrides, e.g. maleic, fumaric, muconic, phthalic, succinic, adipic, sebacic and suberic acids, and glycols, e.g. ethylene glycol, polyethylene glycols, propylene glycol, trimethylene glycol, 1:2-, 1:3-, 2:3- and 1:4-butanediol and 1:4-butenediol, optionally mixed with higher polyhydric alcohols, e.g. glycerol and trimethylolpropane, at least one of the components being unsaturated. The polymerizable mixtures may contain pigments, fillers and extenders, and may be polymerized in the presence of catalysts, e.g. benzoyl peroxide and cyclohexanone peroxide which may be dissolved in dimethyl phthalate, to give films and castings.
