Abstract

A polyester resin containing a ,b -enal groups whose copolymers have improved chemical resistance, is made by heating a dicarboxylic acid free from ethylenic unsaturation with an excess of a glycol to a temperature between 120 DEG and 150 DEG C. until esterification has reduced the acid number by about one half and then adding an a ,b -ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid and heating the mixture thus obtained to produce a polyester resin. Specified dicarboxylic acids free from unsaturation are sebacic, phthalic, tetrachlorophthalic and chlorendic acids. Preferably the second stage of the reaction is effected as described in Specification 836,436. The polyester may be copolymerized with an unsaturated monomer, e.g. styrene, methyl methacrylate, vinyl acetate, vinyl toluene, diethyl fumarate or diallyl phthalate using benzoyl peroxide, methyl ethyl ketone peroxide or cyclohexanone peroxide as a polymerization catalyst. In an example, a polyester from propylene glycol, phthalic anhydride and maleic anhydride was copolymerized with styrene.
