Abstract
The gel time of a thermosetting composition of an unsaturated polyester and a copolymerizable monomer is increased by adding phosphorous acid or a phosphite soluble in the composition. Additional stability is achieved by adding hydroquinone or t-butyl catechol. Specfied polyesters are those derived from an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid (e.g. maleic or fumaric acids), a glycol (e.g. propylene glycol) and, if desired, a saturated dicarboxylic acid (e.g. adipic, sebacic, phthalic, isophthalic, terephthalic or tetrachlorophthalic acids). Specifield monomers are styrene, methyl styrene, methyl methacrylate, diallyl phthalate and a mixture of styrene and methyl methacrylate. Specified phosphites are various di- and tri-phosphite esters. Polymerization of the composition may be effected with a paste of benzoyl peroxide, dimethyl phthalate and cobalt naphthenate as catalyst.
