Abstract
In a process for manufacturing plasticized compositions comprising vinyl ester polymers and oxypropylene polymers the oxypropylene polymer is admixed with the vinyl ester monomer before polymerization of the monomer. The vinyl ester polymer comprises a major proportion of units of vinyl esters of aliphatic carboxylic acids containing up to six carbon atoms, e.g. vinyl acetate and vinyl propionate, and optionally minor amounts of comonomers, e.g. alkyl acrylates, alkyl methacrylates, vinyl 2-ethyl hexoate, maleic esters, fumaric ester and polymerizable acids and amides. The oxypropylene polymers contain the repeating unit -CH(CH3)CH2O- in major amount, and contain more than two such units, and is preferably polyoxypropylene glycol. Polymerization may be effected in aqueous emulsion in the presence of ammonium persulphate, hydrolysed polyvinyl acetate and starch ether. The products may be admixed with fillers, pigments and thickeners and used in the manufacture of emulsion paints. Specifications 779,557, 829,149, 870,287 and 901,380 are referred to.
