Abstract

Copolymerizing isopropenyl acetate with a vinyl ester Preferred vinyl esters are those of monocarboxylic acids which do not contain an ethylenic double bond. Specified are vinyl acetate, propionate, n-butyrate, benzoate and chloracetate. It is preferred to use equimolecular proportions although a ratio of 1 : 4 of isopropenyl ester : vinyl ester may be employed. The copolymers may be produced by bulk, solvent or emulsion polymerization with or without dispersing agents. Catalysts such as organic peroxides (e.g. benzoyl, acetyl or lauroyl peroxide), hydrogen peroxide, a perborate (e.g. an alkali metal perborate), or a persulphate (e.g. an alkali metal persulphate), may be employed. Films and coating solutions may be prepared from the copolymers. The copolymers may be de-esterified and the de-esterified products condensed with aldehydes. In examples, benzoyl peroxide was used as catalyst for producing (1), (2), (3) vinyl acetate/isopropenyl acetate copolymers, (4), (5) vinyl propionate/isopropenyl acetate copolymers, (6) vinyl benzoate/isopropenyl acetate copolymer. In example (7), an isopropenyl acetate/vinyl acetate copolymer in methyl alcohol was treated with sodium hydroxide in methyl alcohol to give a de-esterified product. The product was condensed with (8) acetaldehyde and hydrochloric acid and (9) n-butyraldehyde and hydrochloric acid.
