Abstract
Compositions comprise a hydrolysed vinyl ester polymer having 0 to 80% of unhydrolysed ester groups and an average molecular weight of 1200 to 500,000 and 3 to 40 weight per cent based on the polymer of a monovalent alkali metal salt of a monobasic organic carboxylic acid having 2 to 5 carbon atoms. Specified vinyl ester polymers are vinyl acetate, propionate, butyrate, hexoate, stearate and benzoate polymers and copolymers, and copolymers of such vinyl esters with vinyl chloride, vinyl bromide, methyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate, octyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, propyl methacrylate, butyl methacrylate, hexyl methacrylate, octyl methacrylate, ethylene, propylene and isobutylene. The alkali metal may be sodium, potassium, lithium, rubidium or cesium, and specified salts are sodium acetate, propionate, butyrate, glycolate and methacrylate. Other plasticizers, e.g. polyethoxylated phenol, and antioxidants, slip agents, pigments, extenders and fillers may also be incorporated. Examples describe compositions comprising hydrolysed polyvinyl acetates and (II-IV and VI-VIII) sodium acetate trihydrate, (IX) sodium glycolate and (X) sodium propionate. The compositions may be cast into films.
