Abstract

Polymers of monomers having a terminal carbon to carbon double bond are made by polymerizing in bulk in the presence of a redox catalyst system and a non-polymerizable monohydric alcohol which is soluble in the monomer and which is added in quantities up to 20 per cent. by weight of the monomer. The polymerization may be effected in the presence of polymers, e.g. polymethyl methacrylate, fillers, plasticizers, pigments or dyes. The oxidation portion of the redox system may be air, oxygen, dibenzoyl peroxide or p-chlorbenzoyl peroxide whilst the reducing portion may be an aliphatic, aromatic, e.g. dimethyl-or diethylaniline, or aliphatic-aromatic tertiary amine, e.g. phenylethyldibutylamine, phenylbutyldibutylamine, dibutylmono-ethanolamine, butyldiethanolamine, or trialkylanolamine or salts of sulphuric acid, e.g. N-methyl-di-(p-tolyl-sulpho-methyl)-amine, N-ethyl-di-(p-tolyl-sulpho-methyl)-amine, di-(octyl-sulpho-methyl) -amine, N-methyl-di-(octyl-sulpho-methyl)-amine, or the salt of dibutylamine with p-tolyl sulphuric acid. Fillers mentioned are carbon black, zinc oxide, silicon dioxide, and aluminium oxide. Specified alcohols are methanol, ethanol, propanol, isopropanol, n-butanol, and n-hexanol. Monomers mentioned are ethylene, acrylic and methacrylic acids and esters, e.g. methyl methacrylate. The polymers may be used in paints, lacquers or adhesives, as impregnants for fabrics, for electrical, heat and sound insulation, or moulded into lenses, tubes, hoses, balls, teeth, palate plates, base plates, and gum coverings.
