Abstract
Organic monomers having a terminal carbon-to-carbon double bond are polymerized in bulk in the presence of a redox catalyst system and a polyhydric alcohol which is soluble in the monomer and contains a smaller number of free hydroxyl groups than of carbon atoms, and optionally monohydric alcohols, the total alcohols not exceeding 20 per cent by weight of the monomers. Monomers mentioned are acrylic and alkylacrylic acids and their esters, e.g. methyl methacrylate. The monomers are preferably polymerized in the presence of polymers, e.g. polymethyl methacrylate. The redox system may be a mixture of a peroxy compound such as benzoyl peroxide or chlorbenzoyl peroxide and a t.-amine, e.g. phenylethyldibutylamine or the sulphone amines or sulphone carbinols described in Specification 708,077, or the sulphinic acids and salts described in Specification 710,535. The systems may also include halogen compounds, e.g. those described in Specification 734,948, and metals, e.g. iron and copper, and salts of the type described in Specification 734,848. Polymerization inhibitors, e.g. hydroquinone, may be added to the monomers. Alcohols mentioned are 1,2-propandiol, 1,3-butandiol, 1,4-butandiol, 1,5-pentandiol, trimethylolethane, the monobutyl ether of glycol, and esters of polyhydric alcohols, e.g. with acetic acid. The process may be used in the manufacture of artificial teeth and dental fillings.
