Abstract
A powdered mixture of silica and a carbonaceous cellulating agent such as carbon, is heated in a carbon mould internally coated with boron nitride, to 2600-2950 DEG F. in a non-oxidizing atmosphere and finally to 3200-3300 DEG F. to allow reaction to occur between the silica and the cellulating agent. The coating of boron nitride is formed by heating the carbon mould to at least 1000 DEG F. in a nitrogen-containing atmosphere in the presence of a boron compound such as the oxide, hydride, trichloride, trifluoride, boric acid or elemental boron. The nitrogen containing atmosphere may be nitrogen, nitrogen containing 1-10% by volume of hydrogen produced gas, ammonia, nitrogen and argon, hydrazine, hydroxylamine, cyanogen, or the pyrolysis products of potassium and calcium cyanamide. The boron compound is either used in the solid state or the carbon mould may first be impregnated with an aqueous or organic solution of the boron compound and then heated in the nitrogen atmosphere. Specification 742,016, U.S.A. Specifications 2,890,126, 2,890,127 and 2,890,173 are referred to.ALSO:A carbon mould is coated with boron nitride by heating the mould to at least 1000 DEG F. in a nitrogen containing atmosphere in the presence of a boron compound such as the oxide, hydride, trichloride, trifluoride, boric acid or elemental boron.
