900,758. Refuse bins and shoots. BROAD MANUFACTURING CO. Ltd., ROBINSON, G., and SHIELDS, J. S. Dec. 2, 1960 [Dec. 2, 1959], No. 41034/59. Class 26. A hopper, for connecting to a refuse shoot comprises a trunking 1, to be substantially wholly enclosed in a wall with its lower open end communicating with the shoot and its upper open end with an opening in the wall 19, the latter end being closable by a door 2 hinged to open outwardly and downwardly having a downwardly-inclined panel 5, which is substantially parallel to the bottom 6 of the trunking 1 when the door is closed, the door's back surface 4 and panel 5 being joined to upstanding side panels 7 to form a refuse container when the door 2 is open, a sealing strip or gasket 8 being secured around the periphery of the surface 4 to make the said upper open end substantially air-tight when the door is closed, to which position the door is biased. The-door 1 of pressed metal sheet is hollow and has a self-locking lock 9 for securing it when closed, is releasable by a push-button 10, and movable by a foot-operated mechanism which may comprise an arm 13 pivoted at the top to the panel 5 and at the bottom to one end of a lever 14, the other end of which is movable by a pedal 15 pivoted thereto. The lever 14 is in a casing 16 and the rod 13 in a casing 17 secured to the trunking 1 by rivets 18. To clean the and/or shoot there is a water nozzle or nozzles. According to the Provisional Specification the said container is formed by a U-shaped metal sheet fitted to the back surface 4 of the door 2. Another method of hingeing the door 2 is also described.
