Abstract

900,724. Abrading. OSBORN MANUFACTURING CO. April 21, 1959 [Sept. 22, 1958], No. 13601/59. Class 60. [Also in Group XXVIII] In a machine for the surface treatment of sheet or strip material the material is conveyed in a working area between back-up means and an opposed endless belt or chain comprising one or more surface treating element or elements, a movable stop being actuated either to arrest movement of the material so that it can be surface-treated by movement of the element or elements relative to the material, or to permit the material to be conveyed out of the working area. As shown in Fig. 1, the machine comprises endless belts 3, 13 which are passed around pulleys 4, 5 and 14, 15 respectively mounted in frames 1, 2 and which are tensioned by vertically adjustable intermediate pulleys 8, 16. The pulleys 5, 15 are driven by electric motors. Brush strips 10, 20 are secured to the outer surface of the belts 3, 13 which are supported by rolls 11, 21 mounted in channel members 29, Fig. 4, secured to verticallyadjustable brackets 12, 22. The frame 2 comprises an inner housing H supporting the pulleys 14, 15 and vertically adjustable through gearing by an electric motor 40. The material to be treated is fed between the belts 3, 13 through vertically adjustable rolls 43, 46, respectively driven by electric and air motors. The material being fed is periodically arrested by a stop member 50 swingably operated by an air motor 51. The belts may be provided, instead of brushes, with buff material or grinding or having elements. Alternatively, the belts are replaced by chains driven by sprocket wheels. In a modification, the belts are tensioned by mounting the idle pulley shafts in horizontally adjustable plates, and the inner housing of the upper frame is vertically adjustable by means of a hand wheel. The upper frame may be wider than the brush belts. An electrical control system for the automatic operation of the air motors is described.
