Abstract
900,187. Converting rotary into reciprocating motion; screw-and-nut gearing. CHEMSTRAND CORPORATION. Jan. 13, 1961 [Jan. 21, 1960], No. 1595/61. Classes 80 (1) and 80 (3). [Also in Group IX] A motor 12 drives an endless toothed belt 33 that is used as a means for reciprocating a block 18 along guide-bars 17, there being a pair of gears 36, 37, freely rotatable on the block 18 such that the gear 36 meshes with the left-hand span of the belt 33 and the gear 37 meshes with the right-hand span, the gears 36, 37 being alternately locked against rotation to cause the block 18 to be reciprocated by the belt. The locking means is a lug 42 carried by a plate 43 slidably mounted on the traversing block 18. An L-shaped pin 45 having one end in the locking-lug 42 and its other end in the block 18 is surrounded by a compression-spring 46 to impart a snap-action to the plate 43. When the lug 42 is in its lower position, as shown, it locks the gear 36 against rotation and the block 18 is carried downwardly by the belt 33 until the plate 43 is forced against a lower striker-plate 50. This action forces the plate 43 upwardly and the spring 46 then causes the lug 42 to release the gear 36 and lock the gear 37, thus causing the block 18 to be raised by the righthand side of the belt until the plate 43 is forced against an upper striker plate 51. The action is then reversed. The striking plates 50, 51 are slowly moved towards each other to reduce the stroke of the block 18. For this purpose the plates 50, 51 are slidable on one of the guide-bars 17 and each plate carries a threaded finger 52, 53 spring-biased against a screw 56 threaded in opposite directions at its opposite ends and driven through a gear-box 13. To move the plates 50, 51 back to their starting positions the fingers 52, 53 are forced away from the screw 56 so that the plates 50, 51 can be moved manually along the guide-bar 17. The apparatus is used as a traversing device for a yarnwinding mechanism (see Group IX).
