Abstract

900,072. Building motion. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E.I. Nov. 15, 1960 [Nov. 18, 1959], No. 39182/60. Classes 120 (2) and 120 (3). A yarn twisting and winding apparatus having a rotatable spindle, a ring rail 17, and a primary cam 24 connected through a linkage to the ring rail for imparting a vertical reciprocating movement thereto, comprises an adjustable radius arm in the linkage between the cam and the guide rail, said arm having a member 30 rigidly mounted on a shaft 31 and a further member 29 rotatably mounted thereon, the members being coupled by a follower plate having followers disposed in cam slots provided in the members 29, 30 and means to rotate the rotatable arm member relative to the rigidly mounted member and temporarily lock the members against relative movement. The cam followers take the form of rollers 36, 36<SP>1</SP> and 37, 37<SP>1</SP> which co-operate with the cam slots 35, 35<SP>1</SP> in member 30 and a roller 36<SP>11</SP> co-operating with the member 29. In operation, primary cam 24 which is rotated at a constant speed about its shaft 26 causes, by contact with the follower 25, oscillation of arm 22 and consequently of the follower plate 28 connected to 22 by a chain 21 ; this oscillation then causes a rotary oscillation of shaft 31 which by means of linkage members 45, 46, 47 and 19 causes the reciprocating builder motion of the ring rail 17. The shortening of the traverse, necessary to produce a package conical at both ends, is effected by causing members 29, 30 to change their relative position during the build; to achieve this the following components are provided: a segment having teeth 42 mounted on the arm 29 and meshing therewith a worm gear 40 mounted on the member 30, the shaft of the worm gear carrying a gear 49 co-operating with a further worm-wheel 50 fixedly mounted on a shaft 51 which also carries a fixedly mounted pick wheel 52 and a rotatably mounted ratchet arm 55; also associated with arm 55 is a spring 62; a cable 61, on adjuster 60 and a weight 59, and a ratchet 53 ; a fixed stop 56 and an adjustable stop 57 define the limits of the ratchet arm's rotation. In operation, as the adjustable arm rotates clockwise, the arm 55 under the influence of the spring 62 rotates anticlockwise while rotation of the pick wheel is prevented by ratchet 54; in the subsequent anticlockwise rotation of the arm under the influence of spring 65 on lever 66, the cable 61 is tightened and ratchet 53 engages the teeth of the pick wheel which is then rotated clockwise so causing rotation of shaft 41 and a change in the relative positions of members 29, 30 in such a way that the follower plate 28 is moved away from shaft 31 and the length of the next traverse is shortened. When the follower plate reaches the outer end of the arm, the package is fully wound and a device may be automatically operated to stop the machine and signal the completion of the winding; either manual or automatic means may be provided to reset the radius arm. By varying the shape of the primary cam, and by changing the direction of rotation of the worm gears, packages of varying shapes can be produced, see Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown).
