Abstract

899,811. Spinning yarns; roller arrangements in spinning &c. machines. BRITISH CELANESE Ltd. Oct. 20, 1960 [Oct. 21, 1959], No. 35643/59. Classes 120(2) and 120(3) In the manufacture of a fancy, slubbed and cored yarn, at least one bundle of filaments is fed to a turbulent fluid zone at a constant speed and simultaneously therewith at least one bundle of "slubbing" filaments is fed to the same zone (a) at the constant speed and (b) at a speed at least 50% higher than the constant speed, the speed being interchanged intermittently, randomly, and rapidly between the two speeds (a) and (b) to produce a randomly occurring series of overfed filaments to be fed into the zone and thus form intermittent slubs with the constant speed filaments serving as a core thread, and the final yarn is collected at a speed less than the constant speed and without insertion of twist. The bundles may comprise viscose rayon, cellulose acetate or triacetate, nylon, polyethylene terephthalate or acrylic continuous filaments or yarns spun from staple thereof or natural fibres such as wool and cotton and may be of different colours and/or denier and/or lustre and/or comprise filaments of varying denier and/or colour. As shown in Fig. 1, bundles 1 and 2 of core and slubbing filaments drawn from packages 3 and 6 are passed, at constant speed by rollers 4 and at varying speed through the nip between conical roller 8 and cylindrical roller 9, to an air jet 5 and the composite yarn 12 formed therein is collected at constant speed on a cheese 13. A rail 11 is rapidly displaced and restored at random intervals by mechanical, electronic and/or pneumatic apparatus (not shown) to cause guide 7 to shift the bundle 2 between nipping positions on the conical roller corresponding to the speeds (a) and (b). In a modified apparatus, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown) a stepped roller comprises two portions co-operating with separate cylindrical rollers to form nips corresponding to speeds (a) and (b) and between which the bundle 2 is moved by a rail as at 11. Specifications 732,929, 793,044, 839,493 and 871,798 are referred to.
