899,458. Applying container closures; container Closures. NOFER, P. April 20, 1960 [April 20, 1959; Feb. 1, 1960], No. 13845/60. Classes 125(2) and 125(3). A closure 1 for jars and like containers is formed from a thin, soft, substantially non- elastic sheet metal and includes a skirt having inwardly projecting ribs 4 which, when the closure is applied, are deformed where they abut peripheral projections 8 on the container neck. This deformation provides retaining points 9, 10 holding the closure against the projections 8. The ribs 4 may be of V-shaped or curved cross-section, Figs. 3 and 4, respectively (not shown). The container may be screw-threaded as shown, or have a peripheral bead at its top edge, Fig. 6 (not shown); an angular abutment ring may project from the container wall below the bead 1, Fig. 7 (not shown). The closure is fitted with a packing ring 3. Excess pressure of air in the container may escape past the deformed portions of the lid. An area or areas where the closure seal is weakened by one or more projections 20, Fig. 9, may be formed in the closure during its application to assist in this escape of air. Applying the closure. As shown in Fig. 10, a sealing head has a cylindrical member 23 movable in a housing 22 and carrying a flange 24 in which a disc 26 is movable against a spring 27 by means of a rod 25. The flange 24 is secured to a cup 28 of elastic sheet metal, slotted at 29, for gripping a cap. A rubber ring 34 is surrounded by a leaf spring 35 about which a securing ring 36 may be adjusted. As the cap is applied to a container it is subject to axial and then radial pressure, the mean diameter of the side wall being reduced by a combined drawing and pressing operation in which the ribs 4 are deformed. In order to form the projection(s) 20 the ring 34 may have one or more U-shaped recesses, Figs 11 and 12 (not shown).
